Flat in Docklands

April 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday I went to East India Docks to check out a two bedroom flat that is available for rent on a weekly basis (minimum 3 days actually). As I was on an access audit job (Greg Cowan came along to help) at the Women Resource Centre, they sent me off in an adapted cab and all the way to Canary Wharf. From there I was to take the DLR (Docklands Light Railway ) – one stop – to the East India Docks.

So I was met by Max who showed the nicely converted building which had been divided into deluxe flats. Next to the waterfront, they have a very nice feel about them – unfortunately,  even though the flats are in themselves accessible with wide doorways and level entrances, the shower had quite a step up. There is an en suite bathroom with both bath and shower. There are no grab bars at all – Max informs me they are not allowed to add anything to the fabric of the building so they cannot add grab bars even if they want to. A shame.

I think that the flat could still be a good choice as an alternative from hotel accomodation for those who are travelling in a group or family (the flat sleeps 4 ). For travelers  who would want that level of comfort – with own kitchen, washing machine and dishwasher – this can be a good choice.  A wheelchair user with good upper body strength who could manoevre getting in and out of a bath would be able to manage. With one change from Canary Wharf, it is also easily linked to Waterloo with the Jubilee Line and therefore to Central London and certainly to the South Bank. The area around the flat has also a good choice of bars and restaurants. The atmosphere would appeal to people who like that maritime environment that recalls British seafaring history and yet within reasonably quick and convenient reach of the city.
